The term Reiki itself consists of two Japanese words, Rei which translates as "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which means "life force energy". Reiki can therefore be considered to mean "spiritually guided life force energy."(www.reiki.org)

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive form of energy therapy in which the Reiki practitioner acts as a channel for universal energy to flow through to the client.

It is a deeply relaxing experience in which the practitioner will usually use their hands to direct the energy towards the client, either focussing on particular parts of the body, such as the head, arms, torso, legs and feet, or using a series of set hand placements whilst avoiding any intimate or sensitive areas. The practitioner may place the hands directly on the client (where appropriate) or hover slightly above, whilst focussing on specific symbols to enhance the power of the Reiki Energy.

There are several symbols that Usui Reiki practitioners may typically use in a session; 'Dai Ko Myo', the master symbol, 'Cho Ku Rei' symbol which is used in relation to the physical body, the 'Sei He Ki' which relates to mental and emotional wellbeing and the 'Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen', which can be used across distances if the client is not in the physical presence of the practitioner.

Anyone can access Universal Energy; however, practitioners have studied the symbols and received special empowerments enabling them to channel the energy more effectively. They are able to create space for the client to integrate the energy into their own subtle energy system, so that the body can draw from it as and where it needs it. Importantly, the practitioner is not producing the energy themselves, but they are acting as a channel for it.

"After suffering from a form of PTSD for some time I decided to try Reiki after reading about its positive effects in some studies.

I found the whole experience to be wonderful, calming and stress free. Angharad created a warm and comfortable environment which helped me to relax and become more receptive to the Reiki.

After the session I was left feeling elated and found the experience an almost spiritual one which has helped immensely in controlling the painful flashbacks I was suffering."

"I wasn't sure what a reiki session really involved, but from the start Angharad made the whole process so relaxing and comfortable.

At the end, I felt refreshed with a feeling of calmness and clarity.

I would definitely recommend Angharad to anyone thinking of exploring energy healing."

"My treatment with Angharad was more than I had expected. I was made to feel totally comfortable, warm and relaxed.

I opted to use crystals and I could feel warmth from them as they were placed on and around me. During the session I felt heat radiating through areas of my body.

The session just flew by. I left feeling energised.

Thank you, Angharad."

History of Reiki

A brief history of Reiki

Reiki has been around for some 2,500 years, if not longer, in one form or another. But it was during the early 20th century that Reiki Ryoho and later Usui Reiki were introduced.

This latter form was introduced by Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is known, in the 1920s and is the form of Reiki that is most prominent in the West today thanks to the work of Dr. Takata.

Whilst the use of other forms declined during the Second World War, the popularity of Usui Reiki increased and is widely practiced, not only by private practitioners but also in hospitals and other settings.

There are different stories around why Usui Sensei introduced the symbols into his Reiki practice. Initially, Reiki was used for self treatment and healing; however, today it is commonly seen as a treatment for others. It is believed that Usui Sensei initially taught his students over time using meditations, frequent attunements and Kotodama (sounds/mantras). The symbols were introduced later to assist those practicing to tune into the 'Ki', or energy, more quickly.

There are several resources which recount the full history of Reiki in detail, so I won't attempt to repeat this here; however, if you would like to know more then you may find the following links useful:
